Case Study One - Management Cost Reduction Programme

In late 2010 NHS London announced that it was facing some very significant challenges in both operational management of the health system and in maintaining financial stability. As a consequence it embarked on a programme of accelerated management cost savings for 2011/2012.

MMA were approached to provide a series of focussed workshops, specifically developed to assist staff in coping with the changes and begin to prepare action plans for each stage of the transition process.

The commissioned 1 hour workshops covered the importance of change; reactions to change; introduction to the concept of transition; tips on managing change and action planning. Participants also had opportunities to undertake tasks, work through a group exercise to illustrate the transition process, provide feedback and ask questions.

Feedback received following delivery of the workshops was very positive and included such comments as:

Case Study Two - Educational Establishment Re-structure

An internationally recognised educational establishment announced that, due to UK government spending plans, funding cuts of 30% had to be made over a 4 year period. Some redundancies amongst the workforce were envisaged as part of the re-structuring.

With so much uncertainty amongst the workforce; some staff had worked at the college for many years and this was the biggest change that had happened to them; it was decided to commission Managing Change workshops to support staff in coping with the changes. MMA were then invited to provide the expertise and know how required to delivering a series of 1/2 day change programme workshops in 2011.

The first of the 1/2 day workshops included an introduction to transition management; the reactions to change that people experience; team communication during a period of change; managing individual performance and action planning. The follow-up event, built on the feedback from the first, concentrated on reviewing the skills and challenges of managing teams during the change process. This encompassed influencing skills; enhancing motivation; managing potential conflict and maximising performance during change.
